The uncertainty of Brexit continues to present risks for our members, particularly for those involved in the handling and movement of alcohol and tobacco.
UKWA has published a positioning paper highlighting areas of concern, to aid its lobbying activities and help the government understand the detail of how the excise supply chain industry works, and the impacts of legislation. UKWA and its individual members also wish to further co-operate with the Commissioners to reduce the opportunities for excise fraud in the UK market.
Alcohol smuggling and fraud causes significant revenue loss to HM Treasury, said to be in the region of £2 billion, whilst also damaging the reputation of law-abiding warehouse and logistics operators.
CEO Peter Ward said, “It is vital that UKWA and HMRC work together to close this revenue gap, whilst ensuring that the successful future of a vitally important and legitimate business is not burdened by excessively harsh and impractical sanctions.”
The next meeting of the Customs & Excise Advisory Board will be held on 27th September in London (venue to be confirmed) to discuss the content of this positioning paper before it is presented to HMRC and the policy makers.20180803-UKWA-Position-Paper-Excise-Goods
